Drugs and Alcohol
Alcohol and drugs affect your mood and your decisions. People often use alcohol and drugs to improve their mood and help them relax, but when you are stressed, anxious or depressed, alcohol and drugs can make things worse. Misusing alcohol and drugs can impact on your mental health in various ways – from immediate effects such as increased risk of injury to longer term effects, such as addiction and psychosis.
If you are feeling stressed, anxious or low, sometimes the best thing you can do is to limit your alcohol and drug intake or give it a miss altogether.

A Personal Story
“I needed help. Before I was diagnosed with Bipolar I felt that I needed to escape my troubled mind. I remember once when I was about sixteen I turned to smoking pot and to a crowd of people who were all into partying, taking drugs and drinking excessively. This behaviour really sent me off the rails. I wasn’t doing any school work, I had quit attending my weekly dance sessions; I was half living at a friend’s house and still believing in the darkness of my thoughts. Stability in my life was non-existent. It took me ages to get better. I had to work on it. I had to want to live for a better life. I feel so grateful to have come out the other end now."
